Jimmy Richardson is a creative technologist currently living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but his location is neither here nor there.

He started his career with big design dreams, and eventually pivoted to dev in 2014. After bouncing around a few agencies, and spending 5 years creating frontend at the advanced Milwaukee digital studio Northern Ground, he made the personal decision to go independent in late 2023.

When Jimmy is not working, he is an avid Great Lakes surfer and musician. More often than not, he can be found chasing swell along the eastern Wisconsin coastline.

His former band, award-winning Milwaukee Americana titans The Midnight Purchase, have been featured on Radio Milwaukee, and have played live for the Milwaukee Film Festival and Northern Public Radio (WNIJ), among many others.

He did the van thing back in 2016 before it got popular on the gram. San Diego to Seattle, for a year and half, just passin' through. RIP Ford E250.

Nowadays, he lives with his girlfriend and 2 cats that he considers renaming his studio after on a daily basis.

FAQ

  • Tell me about Jimmy.

Jimmy is a 32 year old developer from Wisco Disco. He has a BFA in Design and Visual Communication from UW-Milwaukee. Design school offered a few classes that taught basic frontend, and that's when he realized he was a massive nerd who liked that sort of stuff too. He went on to get a student job writing HTML emails for the university, and the rest is history.

  • So does he still design?

Occasionally. He designed this site you're looking at. He's had a few contract gigs throughout the years as a designer, but dev has become his main thing. He never wants to lose touch with that part of his brain though, so he always makes time to look at what's hot in the design world these days.

  • Does that mean he partners with designers?

Absolutely! That's some of his favorite work. Agency dev means he's spent a lot of time matching comps and collaborating with designers. Hit him up if that's you and you have an idea you'd like him to build.

  • What is Jimmy's favorite kind of work?

Jimmy specializes in highly-interactive frontends with attention to detail. Digital experiences that command attention and take the user into their own little world. He's spent obsessive amounts of time studying the art of macro and micro-interactions, and ensures everything he touches has been optimized to the nines. He'll boost that Lighthouse score and he'll make you look good doing it.

  • What's his tech stack?

Quite literally anything. He's worked for agencies that stressed a technology-agnostic approach, so he's become highly adaptable in learning new tech, setting his ego aside, and staying grounded in the fundamentals.

His tech stack varies on needs and requirements, but he has 9 years of experience in Wordpress. He's led work on Wordpress sites from 2,000 uniques a year to 2 million uniques a year, developing custom themes from the ground up, integrating Twig template engines, and creating starter themes for his teams.

He is a believer in JAMStack architecture and can make your project headless and/or serverless for a scalability/performance boost. As for an SPA framework, most of his heaviest lifting has happened in Vue and Nuxt. He's worked on product selectors for local brands, advanced Hubspot integrations, and international healthcare software with these tools.

  • Let's talk budget. Is he expensive?

He keeps it competitive! He can be flexible with most budgets, and likes to focus on high-happiness work instead of chasing the highest billables. One-man band means all killer no filler.

  • Can he build my passion project?

He's sitting on some free time as of May 2024 and would be happy to look into some new inquiries. Feel free to let him know 🤙
